DescriptionThis is a warm brown powder horn with a twine strap. The spout is a darker brown, with two raised rings near the tip. The very tip of the horn is chipped and worn down. There is an iron pin in the base plug. The horn is engraved with a hunter pointing a gun at a bug-eyed stag; a dog; a small town; a tree; and a fort.
ProvenanceThis second horn by the Folky Artist has neither a date nor a name for identification, but only a blank cartouche without a date. Most of his horns lack a name or date and possible were made for commercial sale. The hunter carved on this horn wears a Colonial frock coat, breeches and a tri-corn hat. He also carries a powder horn and bag slung over his shoulder and has a fowler mounted to his shoulder. The gun is pointed at a bug-eyed stag that is being chased by a dog… An attractive horn with a deep patina, it shows evidence of having been carried
