DescriptionCircular barrel-type canteen made of wood with side staves (12 in number) like a barrel. The mouth piece is a raised, carved stave with a hole bored into it. The two hoops which run parallel to each other around the outside of the canteen are also made of wood and interlock. Carved into side: "H G / 1776". Carved into opposite side: "W" or "VV" and "I B".ProvenanceThe "I B," or "1 B/P," carved into the canteen denotes the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion, and the "H G," Henry Gardener.
